Although this temple is also described in Ramayana, but the present temple was built by Queen Ahilya Bai of Indore. The Vishnupad temple is made of gold-grinding stone, Kasauti, which was brought from Pattharkatti of Atari block of the district. The height of this temple is about hundred feet. There are 44 pillars in the Sabha Mandap. The grandeur and splendor of this temple is amazing.

As the name suggests, the Vishnupad temple is famous for its 40 cm long footprint, which has nine symbols including Shankam, Chakram and Gadham. It is said that these are symbols of the weapons of Lord Vishnu.

Vishnupad, also known as Dharmashila, is carved on a solid rock and decorated with silver metal. These footprints are decorated with blood sandalwood. Mace, chakra, conch etc. are inscribed on it. This tradition is also said to be very old which is being done in the temple for many years. The octagonal shape of this temple makes the grandeur of this temple very attractive.

The holy place Gaya is named after the demon named Gayasura, who offered an arghya and asked for a boon that whoever sees him will get salvation. Due to this, even after being wrong, people started attaining salvation by seeing him. Unable to cope with this and save humanity, the Almighty appeared before him and asked him to go to the world below.Lord Vishnu sent him to the underworld by placing his right foot on the head of Gayasur and imprinting his footprints on the rock which are still visible today. A large crowd of devotees gather here on the occasion of Pitru Paksha.

There is also a belief that after offering prayers to the ancestors, seeing the feet of Lord Vishnu in this temple destroys all the sorrows and the ancestors attain the sacred world.

There are some other small temples inside this temple complex which are dedicated to Bhagwan Narasimha and 'Phalgishwar', an incarnation of Lord Shiva. This temple holds a very important place for Hindus. Apart from the devotees, this temple is very popular among the tourists.
